ABSOLUTELY NOT, in my view. This is a dumbdown. The Brits can be excessively picky at times (and incorrectly so--I could tell you stories of editors I've dealt with), but for them the 1960s are the 1960s, and VCRs are VCRs.

That's interesting. So now it's legitimized (if that's a word). Professor Strunk would not approve. I agree with Janice that it's a dumbdown, and that's an excellent word for it.
