William, I think it's a question of reliability and as I mentioned, installation is not always a problem free activity where IOM products are concerned. In using a more reliable media with greater density, IOM solves these problems and they are to be commended for having done so. As investors, it's in our best interest that IOM eliminate problems as quickly and effectively as possible.

williamjs, re: Iomega tools on CD-ROM

Just my opinion, but I have never been under the impression that 1. Iomega has any problem with CD-ROM media co-existing with removable storage or 2. CD-ROM and removable storage are mutually exclusive storage solutions.

With that said, since you run a computer store, could you share with us how much your cost on Zips and zip discs are? It would be very much appreciated. Also, how are your sales these days?

<< The Iomega tools that you receive with an ATAPI Zip comes on CD-ROM. I run a computer store and we installed 3 of those puppies today. Why would IOM support a different media in this manner. >>

It make perfect sense..... COST and mass production from an outside vendor.

That is interesting. I don't know why. The tools I got with an IDE zip came on a floppy. Are floppies the way of the future? :-)

I am trying to figure out how big a contributor Jaz is to the IOM bottom line. I think this was discussed a while back - Jaz and Zip sales are not broken out from each other in the quarterly reports, but someone, maybe Michael Coley? made some nice estimates. I am going to try to puzzle it out for myself but does anyone remember? Seems worth evaluating in light of the ever-escalating competition in the Jaz-tier of drives. The Orb looks interesting.

Re ZIP tool on Rom.

This one is too easy.

Think about it. The software for the externals is shipped with the drivers on a 3.25 flippy and the tools on a ZIP diskette.

Now if an OEM internal IDE/ATAPI ZIP is installed as the A: drive and the obsolete flippy drive is omitted from the box for asthetics, the only way possible to install the driver software would be off a CD ROM.

The flippy drive is going awayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
