Well, I need to get out my fancy grammar book (which was, as I remember, an anniversary present) next time I am in my office and see what I can find. "Away" seems to be some kind of implied adverbial preopositional phrase, i.e., "to that distant place." But it also seems to modify the subject, which is the thing that is away. Yet you can never put it in front of either. No doubt professionals have these things all nailed down. But it's fun to stop and speculate.
