Douglas, correct me if I get this wrong. Cheryl, there was the usual quickie explanation of the problem, with the interviewer saying that it seemed to him it ought to be a simple matter to just stick in a piece of software and fix it. Doug said, essentially, that you'd think so, but it wasn't that simple. Take your microwave oven. It's not made for taking apart and sticking in a piece of software. Much of the y2k problem is with embedded chips, and many experts feel we're behind in diagnosing those embedded chip problems so that they can be fixed.

It was mentioned that Doug is a syndicated New York Times columnist.
