!Kung,

Two thoughts contrary to Mr. Lind's opinion:

1) The biotech sector has not historically stayed depressed for that long.

2) Once the general market turns south/levels off, or is percieved as such, funds will flow towards the higher risk/higher return (in theory) sectors; why be losing money on the blue chips when you can play the lottery in biotechs.

That said, I hate to be a promoter; we all know the negatives by now, however.

On the frog front: When the princess kissed the frog, did it really turn into a handsome prince? Or did she just hallucinate on the opiate analog? <g>

Andrew, after doing some "Linding" in the Ligand thread I finally read the original Reuters story with some care. Other than the goose egg cuteness Lind really has not changed his tune much since his more optimistic "Sector catches fire" report on Oct 16. There he emphasizes the stock-picking character of the sector (it goes without saying that he is one of the supreme stock pickers, of course). The rest of the comments in your post are not that negative in my view, but certainly far from the raging bullishness shown a year ago by Murphy among others. Maybe this is good.

One more point, put yourself in Lind's shoes trying to explain to clients why the sexy biotechs are flat or down while the boring, safe pharmas (MRK, BMY, LLY, etc.) are up 40-50% since the beginning of 1997. Would depress me too.
