Mitsubishi Can't Make Enough WebTV Devices

January 2, 1998 (SAN FRANCISCO) -- Mitsubishi
Consumer Electronics America can't keep up with demand
for WB-2000 Web-TV Internet-access devices conforming to
Microsoft Corp.'s WebTV Plus standard.

Mitsubishi Consumer Electronics, a division of Mitsubishi Electric
Corp., Sony Electronics Inc. and Philips Consumer Electronics Co.
(Philips Magnavox) make the WebTV Plus Internet products under
license from WebTV Networks Inc.

Computer software giant Microsoft bought Palo Alto, CA-based
WebTV Networks for US$425 million in one of the biggest
acquisitions of an Internet-related business in 1997.

WebTV Plus, which links to a television set and a telephone line, retails
for US$199. Monthly connection fees of US$14.95 to US$19.95 are
charged for the Internet service. Use of a WebTV Plus device allows
access to the Internet without having to purchase a personal computer
and load software.

The WebTV Plus devices represent second-generation technology with
higher level capabilities. The first-generation of devices were slow to
sell.

Mitsubishi Consumer Electronics said it started shipping WB-2000
devices at the end of November.
