Don, I posted this on the TPRO thread but read the following summary from the Y2k Conference this past September sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute. Unless everyone fixed everything in the past three months, I believe we have far to go before compliance hits the utility business. Check out the EPRI site for a list of the attendees that represent the largest power utilities in the country. Summary of EPRI Y2K Workshop 165 people representing over 50 domestic utilities, four international utilities, the NRC, three competitive power producers, one major oil company, three paper companies, one newspaper, two major I&C system providers, and six consulting organizations attended. The Y2K problem is very real and the embedded systems portion has received relatively little attention compared with the software problems. Billions of dollars are potentially at risk for both our customers and their customers. The problem is pervasive through out our industry, the industries we serve and those which serve us. The problems are very complex, system and application specific, and not amenable to a single "silver-bullet" solution. The clock is ticking relentlessly and the sense of urgency among our customers is intense. Because of the uniqueness of this problem and the rapid pace of evolution of the problems and methods of dealing with those problems, the time value of information is measured in days and weeks rather than months and years, e.g. the best possible information has little value if delivered too late in the work flow. The problems represent a common threat to the entire electricity enterprise requiring cooperation to provide industry-wide Y2K compliance and at the same time requires collaboration to achieve the most effective use of industry resources. Despite the industry's best attempts, there will probably still be problems that will not be resolved necessitating some degree of emergency/disaster planning. EPRI is optimally positioned to supply extremely high value organization and logistical support to this industry effort. EPRI's participation is needed, expected and will be supported by the industry. Possible Next Steps Synthesize workshop results and release preliminary workshop summary 10/17/97 Coordinate website activities 11/14/97 Hold initial follow-on workshops 12/5/97 subject to EPRI senior management approval URL to the list of attendees: epri.com URL toEPRI : epri.com I'm not hyping and have never been accused of being alarmist. Many are working to solve the "bugs", many bugs are still uncovered and the remaining bugs worlwide, in our govt. and within the US private sector that remain come Y2k will present a significant impediment to the way our entire infrastructure works. Making more aware today will lessen the significance. I for now am taking the summary of the EPRI conference in Sept. as the State of Utility Y2k. The next conference in Atlanta is scheduled for Jan28-29. It will be interesting to see how far utilities have progressed in that time. Stephen
