Russia has lately (and probably in the pre-soviet past as well) been more focused on grabbing the territory for itself or its allies

Historically, only those leaders of Russia, who were able to expand mother Russia's territory - just like 'Peter the Great' and 'Katharina the Great# - went into the history books with the epithet 'the Great'.

Clearly Putin is working on his own legacy and by same means has firm plans to join the Greats - possibly as 'Vlad the Great'!
