Boehner's going away interview told the story for me. He was so happy that Trump had beat Cruz, the devil.

This might seem a weird description but I think that to an extent that is preferring the "infidel" to "heretic". (Its also a matter of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"). The establishment and the conservatives have fought for control of the Republican party for decades. They each recognize the other as Republicans but if anything the fight is even more heated because of that. Trump is an outsider to this battle. The conservatives looked like they would do better this round than the establishment, until the outsider* (to this battle and to a lesser extent to Republican politics in general until fairly recently) came in and demolished conservative and establishment candidates alike, but from the perspective for the GOPe at least kept the conservative from winning.
