If I read you correctly you're saying you must lay 3 people off to give a raise to two people? Put some numbers on your scenario... five people making min wage of 8/hr is 320 x 5 = 1600 Giving the 5 a raise to 10/hr would cost 400 x 5 = 2000 so you are going to lay off 3 people? Using the layoff route, laying off one would leave you with a payroll of 400 x 4 = 1600 exactly what you were paying 5 at 8/hr.... But you have lost the productivity of 1 employee or 20% of what 5 where doing? How will you make up that 20%? And you want to get rid of 3 people and take a hit of 60% in productivity?
