I have the same story. Mom was the last of 13 children and raised by a sister. They came from and most still live in Missouri and Oklahoma. All of them I met were blatant racists and one was a pastor-lol. My mom was self educated and would not tolerate racists or Republicans and neither would I. So I have no relationships at all with any of my clan. Which must be huge I had to adopt my daughters relatives to have a family. Which worked out as they are all liberals. A defining difference between pubs and dems is that we dems do not allow any racism. Haven't for 70 years.

I like to think I helped convince and extreme conservative to completely flip his position on the war on drugs. But, I didn't do it alone. I'd been working on him when a family member of his was caught up in the system and all that goes along with it. He realized after a while that the system, the stigma, being branded as a criminal, was MUCH more harmful than anything the drugs had done to his relative. Other than that, though, he's still a Trump supporting asshole.
