I do believe some of this is a result of the US doing away with the military draft. I recall far fewer over-the-top militaristic patriotism stunts prior to the 1980s. Now the government must boost patriotism to get more young people to sign up for military service. For example.. the millions the Pentagon now spends on patriotic shows at football games... always featuring the military. Its enough to make me want to change the national anthem to
'America the Beautiful.'
Americans are suckers for displays of patriotism. Its a kind of secular religion, really.

Maybe 1930's Germany and Japan-lol.

Has there ever been a more militarised society? Maybe Rome, or Sparta. US culture is saturated with images of warfare and gun violence.
