After Gingrich was sanctioned for ethics violations, he was widely known to be leading an impeachment effort over Bill Clinton's infidelities while himself having an affair. After his miserably failed, partisan impeachment attempt, he resigned when the GOP lost a lot of seats over the fiasco. He left under a cloud.
