To all: Please label your posts "OFF TOPIC" if, in fact, they are unrelated to the topic of this thread. It's a time-honored SI rule of etiquette. When you are away for a while, and come back to find some 200 posts on a thread of interest to you, reading through them all is time-consuming. And when almost half of them are basically personal messages from one poster to another, it can be irritating as well. The "OFF TOPIC" heading is a nice way of telling others that they can skip your message. Thanks.

Hi Jbe:

I was wondering what happened to you! After stumbling upon your thread I posted a couple of messages and watched for about a week before any more came up. Then "aprŠs moi, le d‚luge!"

I agree completely about the changing language, split infinitives, dangling participle prohibition so well mocked by Sir Winston, and all other grammatical restraints applied by the Latinists.

We've had some very interesting interchanges, as I'm sure you can see. My problem is getting away from the computer to do those things which are necessary. I still want to get into some of my pet peeves (lie/lay, "if I would have") and many others. But I don't want to put myself into a didactic position or as a self-annointed expert. We've already admitted, or at least Janice has, that we'll accept the "pedant" tag, guilty or not. I jokingly referred to your creation as the "Ped Thread". Anwyay, I hope for more stimulating exchanges and for increased linguistic knowledge for all.

Jack
