White House backs Comey amid Clinton controversy

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest has given a strong on endorsement to FBI Director James Comey -- who has been under fire from a number of high-ranking Democrats since he told Congress Friday that his office was reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

After saying he would "neither defend nor criticize what Comey has decided to communicate about the investigation" Earnest told reporters at a White House press briefing "that the President believes Comey is a man of integrity and principle and good character."

"The President doesn’t believe Director Comey is intentionally trying to influence the outcome of an election," Earnest added. "He's in a tough spot."
