At the bottom of every argument is a strata of belief- how we believe people ought to live, for example. We make choices, all choices, I think, on the basis of the layer- as well as what we put on top of it.

Liberals and progressives like change. They aren't particularly disgusted by people who may live differently from the way they do, and they enjoy multicultural exciting environments. It's probably our genetics that dictates this- scientists studying liberals and conservatives all seem to touch on the fact that liberals like new experiences, and vibrant communities, and aren't motivated by disgust or "purity". Republicans are our opposite. New things often make them uncomfortable- especially when society is changing and old established "rules" change- that's why they're always on the tailing end of any movement, whether it's equity for women, or minorities, or LGBT folks, or cleaning up the environment, or making work places safe, or anything else. They'll always be the speed bump on the road to the future- it's their place and function. And I guess it's not horrible to be the bump- you don't want society to change faster than people can assimilate change. That's partly Trump's appeal, after all. There are people who have been left behind- they're useless in today's society, and they know it, and they don't like it, and they blame others, but they don't really know how to "fix" their uselessness- and Donald speaks to them- with lies, but still, the lies are comforting. If we only have a wall, or deport brown people, or don't let any Muslims in, then these angry useless people will be relevant again- only they won't be.

This isn't at all bout being objective. You and I are not objective about our attraction to freedom, and excitement and trying new things. We have made a subjective choice about what we like- multiculturalism, freedom from religion, freedom to try things- like drugs, or choosing the way you die, or the ability to control your body and it's reproductive potential- but those are subjective choices. Republicans make these choices and come out differently- because they really do want something different. I don't think we coexist very well, since they might as well be a different species, but we're stuck with each other, unfortunately. There is, though, little reason to talk to people whose most basic premises differ from one's own- unless one loves arguing, which I do not. That is why I try to shape this place to keep the guests on the same page- they don't read the same words, they're not in agreement, but they aren't reading from a different freaking book.
