Not sure exactly how many parts NXP has, but it's a lot. And some parts may not have high enough volume. Some may even be semi-custom. I don't know if it is feasible for them to go 100% fabless.

Lowest cost producer is likely a key factor in becoming a leading IoT chipset supplier. Hard to reconcile that with a fabless model. Being fabless for the high end makes sense. If Qualcomm wants to grow in the "jelly bean" side of the IoT market, fabs and fab expertise seems rather relevant.

Managing the capital and operational cost of it all is another area of key expertise. Over the years, Qualcomm has been most challenged on that front. Davis has been a good step in that direction though as will be those coming from NXP and TDK.
