Here's a bit from wikipedia on his work that's relevant to this conversation. Milgram's obedience experiments came under severe attacks. Some critics argued that the validity of these experiments hinged on the acting ability of the learner and experimenter and that most subjects probably sensed the unreality of the situation. Others questioned the relevance of these artificial laboratory setting to the real world. It's not a particularly well done wikipedia piece. For instance, it doesn't include any note of the most serious criticisms of the experiment--its effects on the subjects. I forget the details but they were pretty horrific. That's what brought about a great deal of criticism. I'll look for the movie on Netflix.
