Seriously, going through the entirethread would be a bother. I've seen several answers posted, and I have a very good idea where they are to be found. I'll post them to you tomorrow.

Generally speaking, the thread is more inclined to use couldn't although Janice (yes, taht Janice) made reference to some early crime novels which suggest could as acceptable. As for me, &#147I just want to get my curly qoutes right.&#148

There are also a number of other posts discussing your question. You are correct, in my opinion, that the current use "I could care less" says the opposite of what the speaker means. Another poster pointed out that a hairdresser posted a sign asking customers to wash their hair at least eight hours before coming to have their hair cut. Hmmm... wonder if there is a prize for the one who waited the longest between shampoo and haircut?

I guess the point with both examples is that there is a lack of accuracy and precision in current language.
