Heres an ice fishing tale that has been circulating around the north for years.
It seems that a number of years ago the military were on a survival exercise in the arctic. They decided that the best way to make the hole through the ice was to take a chain saw and to start cutting out blocks. They also thought northernors were doing it wrong by going straight down. Why not go down in tiers or steps then when you were finished you would have a big square hole at the bottom that several people could fish through and you could use the steps as benches to sit on.
They started with a twenty foot square on surface and toiled away cutting and removing tons of ice as they cut their way down through the 8 feet of ice. (the locals were a little puzzled as to what was happening but heck this was the military, they do odd things sometimes)
Everyone gathered round for the big moment when they would cut out the last blocks of ice. Imagine there surprise when they broke through the ice and the water gushed up to fill their hole. Not only did several get wet in the scramble to get out of the hole but there was no way they could get the last of the ice out or stand at the edge and fish.
Opps the best laid plans of mice and men and generals sometimes go awry
