I agree with your criticism, and enjoyed your subtly raising a related issue about beginning a sentence with a conjunction. I'm not such a purist I won't, but does the conventional view of the practice say something about the changed use of semicolons as well? In an era when a sentence didn't start with And or But, was the semicolon more useful than it is today?
