Sorry, that is $16.6/month... $600 / 36 months = $16.667/month.

<..Some posters want to give the impression that the RBOC's/GTE are
sitting around not doing anything. GTE purchasing Quest's dark fiber and BBN are just ways to waste money...>

GTE IS progressive and is getting prepared (especially through GTE-CLEC). Some posters don't get that most, including me, agree that highspeed service isn't IF but WHEN.

<.. The RBOC's have been installing DLC systems WELL BEFORE ADSL came on the scene...>

bill c, I'm surprised that you didn't know that DLCs have been deployed for higher quality VOICE traffic (to mux and interface with the voice-digital nxT1/E1, HFC or OC) for many years:

"Digital Loop Carrier (DLC): Remote central office equipment that allows for efficient transmission of voice traffic by multiplexed high speed trunk interfaces to and from the switch. Local access to the network is via line cards in the DLC, which convert the analog voice traffic into digital traffic for network transmission."

And that in fact, the Ameritech-Microsoft ADSL trial DISALLOWS ADSL service if a CO has a DLC anywhere in the loop due primarily to concerns of interference with their (all important) VOICE traffic?

It takes NEW DLCs that are specifically integrated for DSL (such as DSC is doing with Aware and Westell in their Lightspan 2000 series). However (almost) ALL DLCs in the field currently are NOT integrated, and ADSL is known to INTERFERE with them. They would all have to be upgraded (product specifically, as DSC and AWRE and WSTL) before ADSL is provided, even though they work FINE serving their duties of carrying muxed voice through the network T1, HDSL or OC.

Will DLCs that are (product-specific) ADSL-friendly get deployed and used (while replacing existing DLCs) for this purpose? Where it is cost effective for RBOCs to do so, such as with BA's DSC contract, clearly they will be. Exactly WHEN these will be deployed and ready is the recurrent theme of MY points here.

Good luck-

Steve
