Democracy, Republic, call it what you will the terms are used interchangeably because there's an infinite number of kinds of democracy and republics. And there is no one definition for either one.

I know the right wingers believes we started out as Republic and then changed to democracy, yada yada yada.

Call it what you want it is a form of democracy/republic as the ancient Greeks put forth in that the people elect representatives to represent them and to lead them.

As opposed to dictators, tribal chiefs and kings and queens which had always been the leaders until the human species invented the idea of democracy about 3,000 years ago.
