This election may turn out to be a "Hoover" type of Pyrrhic victory for the Republicans. We know that they can't govern--Trump promised to renegotiate trade deals, restrict immigration and kick out millions of people who are already here. But many Republicans benefit from those trade deals and from immigration--so who will win that battle? And, as you say, what excuse will he have for not following through on those ideas? And what will happen if he does follow through--a lot of people will be hurting. I remember when Alabama kicked out a lot of Hispanics a few years ago and the farmers there found themselves hurting for laborers. There are all sorts of unintended consequences that people who voted for Trump didn't think through. Nor did Trump. We will have a gigantic mess on our hands.
