Mike,

What happens when you use Sprint's dual mode phone in analog mode depends on what arrangements Sprint has made with the analog provider where you happen to be. If Sprint has roaming agreements with the provider, the switchover should be painless, and calls can be made and received in normal manner. If not, you wouldn't receive incoming calls while roaming, and outgoing calls would have to be paid by credit card. The situation is highly changeable, with new agreements happening all the time. I expect in a few years roaming service will be available most everywhere.

As to the reason for charging on incoming calls, the air link is tied up just as much on an incoming call as it is on an outgoing call. It is just as logical to charge for one as the other. With wired telephones, both parties involved with local calls are paying the local provider for service, hence no need to charge the receiving party for incoming calls. With wireless, the originator of the call often is on a wired phone and pays nothing to the air link provider, from which follows the need for charging the receiving party.

With Sprint, at least the first minute of an incoming call is free, so if it is someone you don't want to pay to talk with, you can cut it off with no charge.

By the way, I bought another QCP-2700 for myself last night, so you know what my opinion of Qualcom's CDMA dual mode is!
