Barnes & Noble: Superstores spur overall sales

With a broad selection of titles and a focus on customer
service, sales and orders continue to rise at Barnes &
Noble (BKS) stores, according to interviews with 25
bookstore managers and representatives of large book
publishers. These sources estimated that the chain's
sales are up 5% to 10% compared with last year. In
addition, many sources said the company's superstores
are expanding the market rather than stealing sales
from smaller Barnes & Noble locations. Indeed, despite
increased competition from Borders Books (BGP) and
mass merchandisers, no company was named as
gaining much share from Barnes & Noble.
For now, both
Barnes &Noble and Borders appear to be experiencing
growth. Looking forward, however, sources wonder how
much more growth the market can sustain. As one
publisher said: "At some point, you reach the ceiling.
After all, there are only so many people reading books."
