>>I have read bad things about conditions in life in USSR..to the point that I think they may go back. Please clear this one up also."

Bobby the biggest problem is that investors, gvn, and people
equates reforms and movement toward democracy in Moscow with Russia
Nothing in common! Nairoby probably esembles Kenia to much greater extent than Moscow the rest of the very much backward country
As for Moscow another crisis as we witnessed in Asia and that
is end of it. It is all service and glitter, they produce nothing of value, except natural resources. I have expressed my view before and echoed it to issue of post-cold war instability it is disaster waiting
to happen. Not that we helped in Bosnia in long-run, but in Russia our choice is far more limited-through money at them...

The following probably does not belong here, except to re-iterate gravity

Bobby, allow me to reflect on communism legacy and it's cost to human life. Forgive me for fairly simplistic analysis as it discounts a likely misery that Russia would have endured regardless of events, and that where the biggest difference between Russia and Eastern Europe is. I am neither an expert or witness to Chinese style disaster, but sufficient to say many lives were destroyed. And Cambodia speaks for itself
Now Back to USSR. The Soviet Union as we knew it was born in bloody confrontation between so called
Red Army (color of the flag (or blood?) and White Army-lead by former Czar officers. Many intellectuals supported Red course. Millions died in Civil war. That was nothing though in comparison to Terror that followed.
Archipelago Gulag was born. Mass destruction estimated conservatively by 50 mln people started.
That has ranged from starving villages in Ukraine by confiscating food, livestock and blocking any transportation- about 8 mln people died from forced starvation and land collectivization

Millions of White army supporters or suspected supporters were killed, or send to Siberia (most never returned) Many officers, intellectuals escaped to France, Turkey, though who did not were rounded-up in 1936-53 campaign. The reign of Terror spread from farmers-anyone who had anything (most productive were killed or destroyed) Over 40 mln people were killed, died in Siberian Camps or were never heard from again. (cream of the croup but also ordinary people) Entire nations were rounded-up.
Germans that were invited by Czar to help agriculture and established along Volga River (3 mln) were all send to remote area in Kazakhstan (scores died on freezing trains) Tatars of Crimea and others were all rounded-up.
To recover from what was done (I am not even talking about Iron Curtain related backward movement and psychological brainwashing North Korean style perpetuated for generations)
generations must come and go.Eastern Europe that fell under Cold War division into Soviet dominance
is totally different. Countries like Check Republic were Crown Jewel of Europe.lot of destruction was done but not to very base of human and society core..
