I may reconfigure my modem for Wi-Fi and I misspoke earlier.

My modem is really a combo modem-router and what I called a router is really just a switch.

A router can be plugged into another router, but it should be disabled so it only acts as a switch.

MAC address filtering will prevent your visiting buddy from connecting his smartphone, but it won't deter someone who knows the slightest thing about wireless hacking. Do not depend on the MAC filter as a security measure. Use a strong WPA2 key.
