It's also good manners here to rest one's left forearm on the table while eating; this, too, supposedly originated as a polite way of demonstrating that one was not armed.

Thanks. I knew there was a good reason for that. Little does my mother know that all those times she made me take my left arm off the table, she was placing her life in jeopardy.
