Jay - Re: " I'm sure Intel realizes its weak position being purely hardware oriented -"

You and STAK are completly wrong - are you guys living under a rock?

You and stak are so full of your high falooting bullsh*t that you haven't a clue as to what Intel is all about.

Here are some of Intel's investments - most in SOFTWARE companies:

Intel owns (6%) of Phoenix Technologies
Intel has invested in ETEC

Intel has invested in MRVC - Intel Corporation has agreed to acquire 200,000 newly issued MRV shares, at a price of $20 per share. Intel has
warrants to acquire 500,000 additional MRV shares at the same price,

Intel has invetsed in WavePhore - 500,000 shares of WavePhore for $4 million - this is your new bright idea - Jay - VBI transmuission of data that Intel invested in about a year ago!

Intel invested in XIRCOM - january, 1997
Intel has Invested in CyberCash
Intel has invested in INKTOMI
Intel has invested in MGI software
Intel has invested in CMG Information Services

>>I think the DOJ realizes the enviable position MSFT is in and will try its utmost to weaken that position. <<<
This is smartass but... MSFT vs. DOJ makes me think of wayne and garth playing road hockey; a car comes down the road. garth:CAR!
then they move the net off the road.( DOJ)When the car drives away, game on! They bring the net back on the road and carry on totally oblivious/. I think the department of justice is an irritation, not a mortal threat, (car) so to speak.

>>2. What do you think about the current talk about using the vertical blanking interval to push Internet data to homes?<<
sorry no opinion
3. On top of all this uncertainty is the talk about a coming 25% crash in the entire market.

I think a lot of very smart people in DC realize the stake that the general public has in the market and will do whatever it takes
to prevent the latter scenario - what do you think?
I think along the lines of Rarebird on this(see cube thread) to me China is the last domino to fall. MY guess is after Chinese new year.

>>>4. I'm sure Intel realizes its weak position being purely hardware
oriented - but what can they do other than slowly integrate more
and more of the PC functionality into their product?<<<
This is ultra critical to Intel. They must diversify into bandwidth
and content. MORE pc features is n NOT the right way to go at this point in time. Look at Microsoft's but of Hotmail. Comcast. Web TV etc. AND rumored buy into TCI.

>>>5. One critical problem is that Intel is forced towards "open" standards in whatever it does whereas MSFT rarely is in such situations.<<<
This will hurt Intel until they decide that the war is against MSFT. The O/S is MSFT's magic wand or golden goose.

>>>6. Remember though that MSFT has a $28B liability for employee
stock options - anyone know the figure for Intel?<<<
YES that is also another way to get back at MSFT. Bring the stock price down. BUT A DIRECT ATTACK ON MSFT's O/S IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST. THERE IS NO SECOND CHANCE AFTER MERCED!
