Refinery "bottoms" are heavy vacuum resid and would either go to a coker or be used as asphalt. Cokers use a thermal process (no catalyst) that converts the vacuum resid to a mixture of lighter liquids that are recycled back into the refinery, fuel gas, and solid coke that is mostly used by the iron ore industry. Obviously the value of these products is very low, probably in the neighborhood of $10/bbl, so Rentech's process that converts 80% to midbarrel worth $30-35/bbl has a lot of potential application. I am not in the refining business, but I would guess there is at least 1,000,000 bbl/day of heavy vaccum resid processed in the US and probably 5x that world-wide. If Rentech could license just 10% of that market it would be very lucrative.
