I'm also having a very good year. I'd attribute most of my success this year and last year to the recommendation to only buy when the odds for the biggest gains are most favorable.

During 2014 it didn't seem to matter that much when I bought since the market did so well throughout the year but the market hasn't been close to being as strong in the past two years. Looking back, I would have done significantly better in 2014 if I'd limited my new purchases based on the timing element.

This year I was determined to be a buyer at the right time so set a goal of doing so. It has worked so well I have decided to double the dollar size of my stock purchases in 2017 while reducing the number of stock positions down to four.

I may regret reducing the number of positions if the market performs like it did in 2014 but believe bigger positions in fewer stocks will work out better in strong or normal markets.

Any thoughts?
