Telxon Installs Wireless Check-In System at Avis Rent A Car Locations

AKRON, Ohio, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Telxon Corporation (Nasdaq: TLXN - news) announced today that it has installed a unique dual mode wireless mobile information system that speeds access to rental cars for Avis preferred customers.

The system, called Wizard on Wheels, or WOW, is the first Telxon installation of a mobile wireless connectivity solution in which both local and wide area networking capabilities are jointly integrated in the same mobile computing devices.

When an Avis Preferred customer boards the bus through the front door, the driver obtains the Preferred customer's name and verifies it on a manifest loaded into a Telxon PTC-870IM fixed mounted mobile computer, which contains both ARDIS wire-area and 2.4 GHz local area spread spectrum radios.

The customer's name is instantly transmitted via the ARDIS network to the Avis host computer. Reservation data is accessed to automatically complete the rental. The driver is instructed via the PTC-870IM to drop the customer at their assigned vehicle.

For customers entering via the rear door of the bus, the driver utilizes a Telxon PTC-1134 mobile pen-based computer to check the manifest for the reservation.

When the driver returns to the front of the bus, the PTC-ll34 is placed in a cradle which communicates the information on all of the rear-boarding customers to the adjacent PTC-870IM, which acts as an in-bus controller and relays the customer names via the ARDIS network to the host.

The 2.4 GHz spread spectrum radio installed in the PTC-870IM is utilized to constantly update the customer manifests. Each time the bus passes a designated point in the car rental lot, a new manifest is downloaded to the PTC-870IM and then transmitted into the PTC-ll34.
