This is just type-setter's crap. Fowler lives because his reasons follow logic, not mumbo-jumbo from the MLAA. In any case, Trufflette was using quotes not in a traditional and he said: "blah" way, but as a symbol signifier. She could, I suppose, have used italics, or she could have followed each of your mis-spellings with a "(sic)"; as it was, she, perfectly correctly, decided on quotes and used them in a way that is the standard with writers who care about these things.
