DWB,

I would like to go about this 3rd G things from a financial point of view instead of an engineering point of view.

It already took QCOM about 5 or more years to develop the current system and not mastered it in costs or system performance (according to its critics). It would be fair to say from this point of view what Ericsson's claims for 3rd G is a great exaggeration. Ericsson may want to hire some CDMA experts from QCOM or set up another shop dedicate to do this type of work. So far, Ericsson can only claims its expertise on GSM, TDMA and Analog. Correct? It may hold some patents on CDMA. However, that is far from puting a complete CDMA system together.

Does it only take 5 years to develp a complete 3rd G CDMA system? Now, engineers or futurists may call it a vision when it is succesfully implemented in the year 2000 or later. I and those critics on CDMA's success a few years back would do the same thing to ask Ericsson how about costs and system performance. Show me some things (puting up how much resources to develop) other than talks (vaporware?). What is the difference between R&D vs. Commercialization?
