Holly, do you understand the logic behind making old cars exempt from the smog checks? I am just really baffled. Perhaps the state will announce next month that they are just going to confiscate all the pre-1973 cars!!! Freddy had me so scared that I decided to sell the ancient Mercedes and buy an '80's car, which is awfully modern for me.

I was really very surprised to read in that article the story of the smog alert in 1943!! I spent the first part of my life at the foot of Mt. Baldy, thirty miles east of L.A., and the skies were very blue and you could see the mountain clearly. I do remember when smudge pots to keep the lemon groves warm, and outside incinerators, were banned. Before that, the smudge pots made our ceilings a little smoky looking.

I agree that the unadulterated good news is almost unbelievable. But it is not worth me going there to find out, since I absolutely loathe the place.

Your New Year's resolutions sound intriguing, and obviously are more exciting than mine, which are just to explore Buddhism more seriously and live more frugally, and enjoy my wonderful, increasingly happy small family every day. Now that our hideously dysfunctional relatives are gone, we realize how much we appreciate each other, and how compatible we are!!!!
