Zeev, if we include the commitments for social security, and medicare (for an aging population), we arrive at a very large number which is UNFUNDED. In addition Sec of Treasury Rubin has converted most of the long term gov't debt into short term. This places the U.S. in a very precarious positon if interest rates should rise. I agree that seems unlikely at this point, but one yr ago it seemed far more likely. But it was done for the politically benefit of our president so he can claim a reduction in the deficit, which it has.
