When conservatives can be counted as an automatic vote for a Republican, they have no influence in the party. Republican leaders have long given conservatism lip service and nothing more. Now in the age of Trump, conservatives can't even expect that. In fact, people are saying we need to give up conservatism completely. We're a "nationalist populist workers party" now. Say good bye to conservatism, Constitutionalism, and the legacy of Reagan, Buckley, Goldwater,Coolidge and Lincoln

"We'll hold his feet to the fire" conservative Republicans say. "We're going to have to hold his feet to the fire". "We'll go to war over this." Doesn't work. There is no fire to hold the feet to. There is no ammunition for the war. Even lifelong conservatives like Stephen Moore are abandoning Reagan's legacy and the foundational building blocks of the country.

Conservatives have one giant, nuclear threat: they can withhold their votes. It's best if they vote for a conservative protest candidate. Withholding your vote is the ultimate threat in politics. Instead, they demonstrated, with the "conservative leaders" at the helm, that the most liberal insider ever to run under a Republican banner could run, not even pretend to be conservative, and would still get the overwhelming majority of self-described conservatives to vote for him.

More of the pro-Bernie Democrats bled off from Hillary than conservative Republicans bled from Trump, and Hillary was MUCH closer in temperament and policy to Bernie than Trump ever was to Cruz or even Rubio. The Democrats didn't trust Hillary to be a leftist because she'd never successfully pushed any leftist policy, only talked the talk. Next time around, Democrats will run with a candidate guaranteed to be farther left than Hillary.

Bolton is not a statesman. He is a bomb thrower.
