de Sade's "Justine" (the original one) is actually quite interesting, a poor woman with no luck in life. All of which is the 'reward' for her living a virtuous life. His follow-up 'Juliette' is about her sister, a terrible person committing all sins possible on Earth - and having all luck in life one can think of as her reward.

It gets worse with ' La Nouvelle Justine' - which de Gaulle happened to read and thus forbidding all publishing of de Sade ofn any kind. Not to mention his (de Sade's) infamous '120 Days in Sodoma'.

I read most of the literature about this strange man and also about most other odd people in European history like Cagliostro, Paganini and so many others. All of that before I turned 25.
