because of it's weight. In 5.56 you also have lighter ammunition. Anyone in the service since the late 60s was trained with an AR15/m16 style rifle and familiarity counts for something. Personally I don't care for them. I prefer the bull pup type carbines or traditional M 14 type rifle.
