I am not sure what the reasons are. All the people I invited over were about my age, many were older. They all came from middle class to affluent backgrounds. My background was relatively humble. But my parents still managed to teach me manners. My mother worked, too, which was unusual at the time. And while she never taught me how to clean a house (which I deeply regret) she did find the time to inculcate table manners and general standards of good behavior for when I was a guest in another's house.
