Many of the Price funds have favorable profiles. By that I mean their Morningstar Performance rating is higher than their Morningstar Risk rating, which measures the fund response to market volatility. I spend a few hours a month in the public library looking up fund ratings in the Morningstar ranking list, which comes out biweekly. For example, Strong Common Stock is ranked High for Performance, but Below Average for risk (if memory serves). That gap is what I'm looking for. Columbia Special is ranked AA (Above Average) for both risk and performance, so I'm on the lookout for a small-co fund with what I consider a better profile, for example AA performance with A or BA (Below Average) risk ranking. But I also limit to funds in families I already do business with, or available in the One-source program.
I don't remember specifics except that many of the Price funds meet this criteria. Blue Chip Growth, Midcap Growth, Equity Income are a few examples from memory.
As far as timing an investment, I do both dollar-cost average and time. The current correction seems to provide a good entry point for long-term funds, such as IRA money. Some of the chart trends appear to be turning up. But '98 should regress to the mean in terms of performance.
