I think it could have been more widely accepted if we called it something else....a compromise... I argued hereabouts off and on for years that the state should not be in the marriage business. Marriage is a partnership contract. It is that for everyone. For some it is also a sacrament. For the sacrament folks, it is upsetting to call a couple not eligible for the sacrament married. I always thought it would have been better to award the word to the sacrament and come up with a different word for those with civil marriages. But, that would have been distressing, too, to all those who were married in Vegas and it didn't work out that way. Thank you for your thoughtful response. It was helpful.
