Five years ago I shattered my lower leg into quite a number of pieces.

The Doctor in the Emergency Room remarked, "You don't seem very upset about this."

I asked her, "Would it be particularly helpful if I was?"

I understood what happened and I was familiar enough with medicine to know I was facing multiple surgeries and a long recovery time. I took out my contacts, replaced them with glasses and took two blurry photos with my phone. My foot pointed in quite the wrong direction.

I look grim and resigned to what had happened an hour earlier. But any theatrics or a cheerleader would not have been helpful - at least they would not have been helpful to me.

I was now in the right place and it was what it was. What good would theatrics have done?

When they suggested I could probably use some morphine before they wrapped my leg in a temporary cast, I told them, "That would probably be helpful."
