If ABIWord is any good it will open .DOC and .DOCX files just like Word. I use both LibreOffice and Open Office and they work just fine.

Even though your needs are quite limited, I'd still go ahead and get the Libre Office suite. I've been using it for about 5 years now, get each update offered. I only use the spread sheet capability for 2 or 3 very simple needs (check book, for instance). I use the word processor for much more as I keep a few diary type files for some stuff I do. Libre can handle nearly any format, from what I can tell.

My point is, all the extensive capabilities included in the entire suite just sit on my machine and have never been opened. I'm not even sure what most of them are for. You may be surprised to find one of them might one day be useful. Wouldn't hurt to take a look.
