Hi Jbe,

I've had multiple copies of Fowler's. I keep giving them away to kids. All of them have been the 1965 edition as best I can remember. I read somewhere a review of the latest edition, which apparently puts its approval stamp on a lot of uses that formerly were frowned upon. So be it, but I haven't seen it and haven't decided whether or not to buy it.

The examples I gave, I think, were meant to show the ambiguity and seeming lack of absolute usage direction for farther, further. But my Fowler's is very outspoken and definite about many other usages.
