Versatility is this DVD player's middle name

Digital Video Systems, a karaoke system manufacturer in Asia, hopes to make a splash in the United States in March when it introduces a DVD player that works with both PCs and TVs.

The as-yet-unnamed device is expected to cost about $600; it will be equipped with a standard cable to attach to your TV and a FireWire interface for hookup to a computer. FireWire allows high-bandwidth delivery of broadcast-quality video and CD-like audio through low-cost cables; it enables data transfers of up to 400 Mbps (megabits per second)

A computer must be FireWire-compatible to support the player. FireWire-enabled PCs are expected to become common after the introduction of Windows 98 (due sometime this year), which supports the standard; Compaq is already shipping FireWire-ready desktop systems. Digital Video Systems is exploring the possibility of selling a FireWire upgrade kit with its DVD player.

The new DVD player will also offer an optional Winchester storage drive--which can hold up to 4 hours of compressed video for later playback--and an optional Dolby amplifier system, producing up to 900 watts of Dolby Digital AC3 sound.
