Look at the timing of Trump U. It was the real estate bubble, and there were lots of "experts" trying to cash in on it by selling tapes, seminars, etc. showing us how to leverage our way into wealth. Trump was a real estate expert himself.

Then the real estate market utterly crashed--not a simple slow down or even a normal recession--a true crash in which, overnight, lenders started calling in loans. So, of course, many of those who had paid for advice were going to be unhappy. Add to that the fact that Trump University no longer had a reason for existing, so it eventually went under, too.

I don't see it at all as some kind of master con by Trump to fleece people. I see it as a logically grounded business effort that experienced bad timing. Poorly timed business ventures are a dime a dozen.

Similarly, Trump gets negative press about not paying contractors. That was mainly, if not completely, contractors caught up in the casino bankruptcies. Once one goes bankrupt and the banks take over contractors are way behind other creditors and usually do get stiffed.

Other stories emerged that were positive as to how Trump pays his contractors well and keeps them happy and eager to work on subsequent Trump projects. There were TV interviews with these people. But none of this made it into the MSM.
