Management Team Bios
Paul Gustafson, Co-Founder, President and CEO
Paul Gustafson is a co-founder of Aptis Communications and a member of the company's
Board of Directors. Gustafson has 15 years of experience in the engineering and marketing
of networking and communications products. Prior to Aptis, Gustafson was Senior Director
of Business Development at Shiva Corporation where he was responsible for establishing
key strategic partnerships, including mergers and acquisitions. While at Shiva, Gustafson
was also the Director of Product Marketing during the period when the company shifted its
focus to remote access sales which boosted sales from $7 million in 1992 to $175 million in
1996. Prior to Shiva, he was responsible for product marketing and management at
Rockwell International's CMC division, and held communications product development and
marketing positions at Prime Computer. Gustafson holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from
Northeastern University and pursued an MBA at Babson College.
Christian Outzen, Co-Founder, Vice President, Engineering
Christian Outzen has over 10 years experience in the engineering of data networking,
communications, modem technology and computer products. Prior to co-founding Aptis,
Outzen spent eight years at Shiva Corporation in various development and management
positions and most recently as Director of Platform Development. Shiva credited Outzen for
being the lead hardware architect on all of its award-winning high-performance products.
Before Shiva, Outzen held a series of engineering positions at Digital Equipment Corporation.
Outzen graduated from Cornell University where he earned both a MS and BS in Electrical
Engineering.
Bob O'Neil, Vice President, Sales
Bob O'Neil has over 15 years experience in the engineering and sales of data networking,
communications and computer products. Prior to joining Aptis Communications, O'Neil spent
five years at Cascade Communications Corp., in various sales management positions and
most recently as Assistant Vice President of Telco Sales. Prior to working at Cascade,
O'Neil held sales management positions at Proteon and was the director of network
technology at Whirlpool Corporation. O'Neil received a BS in Environmental Chemistry from
the University of New Hampshire.
John Dowling, Vice President, Operations
John Dowling has over 20 years of experience in the design, manufacturing, and support of
high availability networking and computer products. Prior to joining Aptis Communications,
Dowling was Vice President of Operations at Cascade Communications Corp, where he
established the infrastructure to facilitate the rapid growth of the service provider
marketplace. Before Cascade, he was a Vice President at several technology companies in
the high availability market, including Bytex Corporation, Epoch Systems, and Coral
Networks. Dowling has also held product development and launch positions at Eastman
Kodak and Data General. Dowling holds a MS in Manufacturing Engineering from the
University of Massachusetts and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of
Vermont.
Dave McCool, Co-Founder, Director, Software Development
Dave McCool has 16 years of experience in the software development field. Prior to
co-founding Aptis, McCool spent nine years at Shiva Corporation in a variety of
development, project management and engineering management positions. As Shiva's third
employee, McCool was an integral part of the team credited with creating its first remote
access product. Additionally, he lead the technical team for Shiva's transition from the Mac
market into the PC market. Most recently, McCool was Director of Platform Development at
Shiva. McCool received a BS in Electrical Engineering from MIT.
Shuang Deng, Director, Product Management
Shuang Deng has 10 years of experience in the telecommunications industry where he
focused on development and carrier service planning. Prior to Aptis, Deng was employed
by GTE Laboratories where he worked on data access service network design, service
planning, traffic and network engineering. Deng was an integral member of the GTE team
credited with the original concept of ADSL for data services. Before GTE, Deng was
employed by Hewlett-Packard as a co-designer of the industry's first ATM broadband
tester. Deng received a PhD in Computer Science from University of Alberta in Canada, and
holds both MS and BS degrees in Computer Science in China.
Lisa Ranger, Director, Marketing
Lisa Ranger has over 15 years experience in the marketing & communications of hardware,
software and networking products. Prior to joining Aptis, Ranger was the Director of
Marketing Communications at Shiva Corporation and Director of Marketing at Bitstream.
Before Bitstream, she held various marketing communications positions at Prime Computer.
Ranger pursued a BA in Business Administration from the University of New Hampshire.
