That was what my business-partner's Mom always said. She grew up in Ukraine before emigrating to Canada and then to the US. She said "Ukraine is very beautiful but you can't eat beauty."

He once told her he was interested in visiting Ukraine to see her village, and she told him, "No you aren't," with a conversation-ending finality. She always remarked how easy and convenient it is to live in Los Angeles. It's not all beautiful but it's fairly easy and convenient no matter where you live here.

I go to Mexico and nothing is easy. I speak Spanish well enough and pretty familiar with the culture, but just like France or Italy, being able to negotiate your way doesn't mean it's enjoyable - it's like an annoyance tax you have to pay for being in a place like that.

For me there's no annoyance tax I have to pay when I'm in Australia, Germany or the west coast of America.
